When you are feeling anxious or stressed some very simple breathing exercises can reduce those feelings right on the spot. These can be performed just about any time or place; regularly or merely when you need to let go of some tension.

So the next time you'd like to take just a bit of the edge off what you are feeling, try this: Place your hand on your lower abdomen just below the navel. Now take a deep breath down to where your hand is; hold it for approximately two or three seconds, then exhale completely. Once again, breathe deeply and exhale completely, only this time try to exhale a little more air than before. Repeat this five to 10 times, letting each breath get deeper and then notice how different you feel.

Here's another variation of that exercise: Take a breath in as deeply as possible and hold it for 10 seconds, then exhale for a count of seven seconds. Once again, repeat this exercise five to 10 times and feel the difference.

If you find yourself in a moment of transition between two stressful events, simply think the word calm or peace as you breathe in and think the phrase let go as you breathe out. This variation will usually enhance any breathing technique you use. Deep breathing can ensure that you have the upper hand over your stress.
